Today's Cycling Tip

Check Chain Wear - If you ride a lot, you should inspect your chain every six months or so to see if it should be replaced. Check chain wear by leaning your bike against a wall and pushing on a pedal to load the chain. Then, pick any chain pin on the top of the chain and measure to any pin 12 inches away. Because the links are exactly an inch long when new, you should be able to measure exactly 12 inches between two pins. If the measurement is 12 1/8 inches, or longer, it's time to replace the chain. Keep in mind, that when you replace the chain, you may also need to replace the cassette because they wear at approximately the same rate.

Cycling Glossary - Word of the Day

freehub

The barrel-shaped and splined part found on the drive side of a rear-wheel cassette hub. The freehub contains the mechanism that drives the bicycle when you pedal. The cassette (cluster of gears) slides onto and is attached to the freehub so you can't see the freehub until the gears are removed.
